Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
