Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
