Administration Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.
Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.
At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
